So, let's start a sock...

The Starwars hat is complete, and I must say that I love it. Unfortunately, it is still drying. So you will have to wait until tomorrow to see it.
I also got my seed stitch jacket (the baby sweater I was knitting...remember that?) moving. I only have the sleeves left and some finishing.

Now, time for a sock.
With careful thought...I decided to make a nice warm winter pair for a Christmas gift, of course...

These are from Nancy Bush's Folk Socks. The Mamluke Socks.

I couldn't decide on colour choices. I am using the elann devon that I bought recently. I wasn't sure if I really wanted the stark contrast that they are done in...and the black grounds them a bit. Also, the recipient wears black pants frequently in the winter...so why not try to match that? I have a lighter colour of plum that I could be using...what do you think?

This gives me a chance to see how I like fair isle socks...to prepare for my own long awaited Norwegian Stockings!

I love your choice of colors, and the pattern is perfect! I've been knitting less than a year now, and I love fair isle and shawls. I'm working up to it! Thanks for your inspiration!

How can you go wrong? Any combination will be beautiful, just different. (More contrast, casual wear; less, more professional?) One of the things I enjoy about many aspects of knitting: few absolutes in color and design.

I loved the plum and black, but it is low contrast - perhaps the lighter shade of plum would show the pattern better? You are doing a beautiful job of tension!

I love the colours you chose for those socks. Very classy looking. I was thing of buying some of the Devon, but I haven't done so yet. Must get on that.

I think the colors look very nice together. Being a little more subtle does make them more versatile. And your fair isle looks so smooth and even! Mine turns out strained and lumpy. I guess I should practice on swatches, right? Ugh.

i'd go with a slightly lighter shade of purple. after all you don't want to put all that work into a fair-isle sock just for it to be invisible!

I think the colors you are using -- and the pattern -- are gorgeous. I'd keep going the way you are.

I like what I see. If your recipient wears black, they probably would like this subtle colourway!

Oh, that is lovely! So subtle, it'll go with anything.

I think those colors are perfect. The brighter colors are great but they really stand out. A pair of socks like these will be perfect everywhere - even with black pants at work.

I'm a fan of less contrast rather than more, and I love your color choice. They're going to be smashing!

Love the color combo. Subtle and gorgeous!

I think they're fab as is and Someone who wears a lot of black will totally appreciate the subtleness of them.

In a class with Nancy last year, she said that she shouldn't have used the Arabic letters (the row just above the heel) in this sock. They spell out Allah and apparently it's very insulting to certain cultures to have this on footwear. She suggested changing the pattern on that row to something geometric, or substitute your own word. Just FYI.

I love the colours - most people I know wouldn't wear more brightly coloured socks (except maybe with jeans) so a more subtle colourway is much more versatile (and in this case, beautiful)

Love the color choice - especially with black pants! Your taste is always impeccable - color and style!
Can you please tell me what pattern you used for the blue and white mittens in the background? So beautiful!!! But who would ever expect anything less from you and your magic needles???!!!

I've made the Mamluke socks as well. I very interesting pattern to knit.Be careful with your gauge;my second sock was larger than my first.I really like your color choices.

The color choice is spot on. But purple is one of my favorite colors! I will have to look at that pattern more closely.

Tell us more about the yarn. Do you like it?

I love the colors-deep plum is one of my favorites. The stitches look pretty-I'd keep knitting.

Understated but very pretty.

I like those colours together. If the recipient like to wear a lot black pants, those colours will go very well and not make them feel all weird wearing something colourful on their feet.
