Yes, that is correct...another pair of socks.
I was in Michael's craft store yesterday and saw Patons Kroy sock yarn. I don't think I have ever come across it before. It is actually a decent yarn. Well, it is not a koigu, definitely not, or a regia silk...but it seems like a good WASHABLE sock yarn.
Washable is the key word here...because the recipient must have something washable...accidents have already happened.
(Now, that being said, I have accidently and now on purpose put my koigu socks in the washer and the dryer...a great yarn.)
But, for this person...I would need at least 3 skeins of koigu...and $45 socks, well, no. So I decided to give the $6 a ball kroy a try.
It is a rough yarn...but sometimes I like that for a sock yarn. I have knit myself a pair of lana grossa wool socks that I love to wear.
Kroy knits up nicely with wonderful stitch definition. The pattern is retro rib socks. I knit myself a pair before and I love them. I have worn them so much, they are the first pair of hand knit socks to get a hole in the heel. A bitter sweet happening in a knitters world.
Some sort of ribbing is a must for this person. My only concern is the size. This ribbing is very stretchy and I went up a needle size...I am just unsure. Here it is stretching over my hamhock.
Many of us in the family have large calves...knee high boots that fit are rare! (See that floor! That is a first time for refinishing hardwood for us...not too bad!)
I will not make the sock long enough to go over the calf...but at least up to the calf. There is still a little room in there as well. I don't know...what do you think?
Will this yarn stretch out with wear as well?

Kroy is my favourite sock yarn. But then, I like my socks tough. They used to make it in every colour under the rainbow - have a pair of orange lace Kroy socks. - but now only in nuetrals. So sad.

I recently made a pair of Kroy socks, being enamored with the colorway and the cheap price. Unfortunately they pilled up like crazy the first time I wore them. Boo. I would be hesitant to use this yarn again.
As a long time lurker, I just want to say I'm glad you're back! I always love looking at your FO's – they're gorgeous! ^_^
I really like Kroy; I've been using it for socks for almost 10 years (back when they had both 3 and 4ply). I think the older Kroy is softer than the new Kroy Socks although my socks with Kroy Socks are okay--not cushy soft but no pilling. I was actually thinking last night that my two favourite pairs of handknit socks are made with Kroy 3ply (I stocked up when it was discontinued).
Have you checked out Len's Mill yet? Much better selection than most Michael's (I was in a Michaels today and very disappointed) :)
