A single big sock.

Here is one big sock. Not the most perfect sock...I would definitely need 3 balls for a full pair....but this will do for Dad's first pair of socks.

I will sew in the end once he gives it a try. I am using the leg pattern in Nancy Bush's Folk Socks of the Highland Schottische Kilt Hose.

The cast on is the figure eight cast on. I like the way the increases look at the toe more than a short row toe.
I did do the heel in short rows.

The yarn, Knit Picks Essential, not my favourite. I will choose differently for his next pair.

First, I must complete this pair...here comes another huge sock.

It's looking good! I feel your pain. I promised Mike (DH) I'd make him kilt hose. He likes the "John Anderson" pattern and made the "ultimate sacrifice" of hitting the LYS when they had a sale to pick out yarn. So, now it's two pairs. And then it'll be three because I'd like some kilt hose that aren't size ginormous, followed by someone (several someones probably) in the band likely wanting a pair. Be careful--you may be on a slippery slope there!

I just finished one Embossed Leaves sock out of that yarn. I don't really like it either. That's probably why the other sock hasn't been started!

Your sock looks so warm!!! :-)

I have found that KnitPicks yarns aren't as soft as some of the other brands. Of course, they don't cost as much either. I guess it is true...you get what you pay for.

Like Amy, I am wondering what it is that you don't like about the Essential. I have some in the stash that I haven't used yet.

Knit Picks also recommends their Palette as a sock yarn. I started the Waving Lace socks with it -- or maybe it was Embossed Leaves. Anyway, I did not like it for socks. Not really soft enough and VERY splitty.

But your dad's socks look great!

I know you dad will like them. Are you trying to get them finished by Father's Day?

Bear in mind that Palette is a hand-wash only yarn....if that matters....=)

The socks look great! I am in the middle of socks for my dad also, and I agree, the Knit Picks Essential is not the greatest. A bit scratchy.

It was good to read you are sewing. I spent all day making bathrobes for the girls...I always feel like I am cheating on my knitting.

Love these socks. I'm hoping to start some soon. Like Amy I'm wondering what it is about the Essential that is less than satisfying.
