It's all gone...

My laptop hard drive. Gone.
All of it...pictures, patterns...yup.

Have I backed anything up? Well, not long ago, way before the summer I backed up photos. All the family photos since then....gone.

POOF.

Let that be a lesson to everyone, like myself, who don't regularly back up important files....it could happen to you.
So here I am, in the dungeon on the desk top that spontaneously shuts down when you are working on it...getting my knitblog/ravelry/internet fix.
Sure I have pictures, but the easy-pop-the-card-into-the-laptop-to-upload thingy is not on this contraption, so you have to wait.
I've decided to replace the hardrive, which is the most cost effective choice at the moment. I'm surfing for a mac...refurbished thanks to Karen. I can't wait till I cross to the other side...away from the pc over to mac...
soon my friends...soon.
But for now, take a moment and remember the old hard drive...and what was one it...cause I have no idea.

At least something good is coming of this - you're getting a MAC! :) The beauty of a mac (besides how amazing they are!) is that you can get a copy of Windows and run it on there as well in case you have some programs that you don't want to repurchase for the mac.

I am sorry about the loss. I got tired of PC/Windows issues and I made the big switch last year. I am very pleased with my IMac. I turn it on and it simply does what it is supposed to do. nice.

The loss of those family photos is a heartbreak. I'm so sorry.

When you get your Mac, get a Time Machine. It's the kind of toy that was created just for doofusses like us who don't do enough backups.

So sorry to hear about this, but it's a good reminder for me. Have fun with your new Mac!

poor poor pc, never had a issue with any of my macs, really never with any of the 5 of them. I have an emac not in use if you would like to use it.... you can connect to the internet at least. But it is quite large, like a big fat white pregnant computer sitting here dusty beside me. Not portable at ALL. Come get it, but you will have to visit first....
Poor Poor PC. RIP

Oh noes! Yet another reason why I love my Mac. Automatically prompts for a backup weekly. All I have to do is plug in the external drive when it asks me to. Good luck!

I'm glad you are using the link I gave you to look for the refurbished Macs. (Just in case anyone thought I actually repair computers. Ha!)

I love my Mac, but I can't remember when I last did a backup. Hmmm....

Thanks for the reminder!

So sorry to hear about your lost photos, but I'm excited to hear about your leap to Mac. I took the leap last year and have not regretted it for a single second!

I had a hard drive go kerflooey shortly after the warranty expired on the computer. I replaced the drive but kept the old drive around since it had several projects on it that I really hated to lose.

One day I got the idea to hook it up as a slave to the new drive. It worked and I was able to retrieve everything I thought I lost.

If your problem is that the drive won't boot, you may want to try this. If you or someone you know can't do this, a tech can change the jumpers, hook it up and if it's readable, your files can be moved off onto your new drive.

Good Luck.
